Early Decision…

Hey all. After taking 2 final exams and completing 3 final papers I am now officially finished with the first semester of my sophomore year. I drove home yesterday and am now ready to enjoy nearly a month-long winter holiday break. As I settle in for a break and begin to unwind, I realize that many of you reading this are not so relaxed.

I’m not completely sure of all the deadlines but I am assuming that many of you who applied early decision (I) are finding out in a few days or just found out in the last couple days about your acceptance. Also, I am assuming some of you are considering Early Decision II (the deadline in Jan. 1st I believe).

If you are waiting to find out… all I can say is hang in there. I applied early decision and remember how nerve-racking the wait is. It is frustrating too because you feel completely powerless over the process. After all the stress and pressure of the big tests and applications, all you can do is wait and that can be very difficult. I know it is easier said than done, but try your best to just relax and go with the flow. If you get in, congratulations. If you get deferred, hang in there and don’t give up. If you don’t get the acceptance you hoped for, don’t be hard on yourself. There are so many great schools. Bates is a unique place that is very special but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other great schools out there.

You might be thinking, “easy for Paul to say all this… he is already settled and happy in school”. Yes, this is true but I was in your shoes not too long ago and understand where you’re coming from. Whatever happens, try to stay positive, patient, and open-minded. I wish all of you the best of luck. Until next time…

Back to Bates…

Hey all. Thanksgiving break is nearing its end. Tomorrow morning I will finish packing the car and head back up to campus. I hope to get back to Bates sometime in the early afternoon. The vacation was really nice. I still find it so great that no matter how long I am away from family and friends, when I come home it is as if nothing has changed.

I was certainly grateful that I had a whole week off to rest, relax, and prepare for final exams and papers. Although I kept telling myself I would get work done over break I accomplished very little. Finding the motivation to work while eating turkey and hanging out with family + friends is not easy. I’d like to blame my lack of progress on work on the tryptophan from the turkey but I don’t suppose that’s fair. In any event, tomorrow I will be back in my dorm room and will hopefully find the inspiration to focus on the busy 2 weeks ahead.

In other random news, my dad and I put the ski rack and snow tires on the car I am bringing up to school. It should now be fully winterized and prepared for a winter full of skiing. That’s all for now. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Until next time…

Back Home…

Hey all. I am home for a brief period of time before heading back up to Bates tomorrow. It’s really great to have a couple of days off and to relax at home with the family, eat some home-cooked meals, and sleep in my own bed. I even got to go to a NY Ranger game with my dad. They lost unfortunately but it was still nice spending time with my dad and being with my fellow crazy hockey fans.

I have also been doing some significant studying because the week I get back I have a midterm exam in Latin American history (Wednesday), a Spanish presentation on native populations in Argentina (Thursday), and a test on criminal research in Criminology (Friday). Having this nice little October Break has been the perfect way  to relax my mind and prepare for the tough work week ahead.

In my next blog entry I am going to post some pictures taken of campus during October. The campus is absolutely gorgeous right now with everything at peak fall foliage. Be on the look out for those in the next few days. Until next time…

Study Abroad… Already.

Hey all. Last night there was a meeting for sophomores interested in studying off-campus next year. The idea of working/living/learning abroad has always appealed to me so naturally I was excited for it. Though the meeting was fairly basic: Information presented on a powerpoint, seniors sharing their experiences from abroad, and a Q+A session, I found myself feeling a bit overwhelmed.

A huge group of sophomores packed into the room in Chase Hall for the meeting (this was just for the 1st session… there were 2 identical sessions to accommodate for everyone’s schedules) and just seeing the sheer number of students interested in studying abroad was a bit imitating… though also a good sign that off-campus study is appealing. I think what freaked me out the most, but also got me the most excited, was the idea of stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something completely new and different while possibly thousands of miles away from family + friends. Oh and did I mention you have to declare your major before you can sign up to go abroad?

Clearly I have some mixed emotions about this but in the end I know studying abroad would be amazing. For now I will take things one step at a time… to learn more about Bates study abroad click here. Until next time…

Fun at Bates…

Hey all. Life at Bates has been great the past week. I unfortunately came down with a bit of a stomach bug earlier in the week but I have since bounced back and am feeling much better. As always, there has been a lot of work to keep up with but so far it has been fairly manageable.

Today was a somewhat eventful day. I had an article come out in the Bate Student. It is about Bates women’s soccer and is pretty much just a news article but if you are interested check it out here. Also today I had my first jazz band rehearsal which went well. I haven’t played the saxophone very much in the past few years so getting back into it won’t be easy but it will be totally worth it in the end. The band is really talented and I know I am going to have a lot of fun with it. After practice, I grabbed a quick dinner and headed over to the turf field for some IM soccer. It felt great to run around after a day of classes and as an added bonus… We Won.

Now it is time to tackle some work but I will leave you with a picture from last weekend’s 80’s dance. I am on the far left and the other 3 people are my friends Drew, Alex, and Matt. Please have a good laugh at the expensive of all 4 of us for our ridiculous outfits. Until next time…

In the swing of things…

Hey all. I have now been back at school for more than a week and am starting to get a pretty good read on my classes. ‘Read’ being the operative word since it seems I have so much reading to do in my 4 courses.

I am taking Latin American History, Wartime Dissent in Modern America, Spanish 215, and Criminology. My classes are all compelling in their own way. In the first 3 days I have learned more than I could have imagined. From Jane Addams’ pacifistic ideals, to Thoreau’s distrust of democratic government, to Aztec sacrificial practices, to the rule of provocation and the intricacies of the judicial process, it seems there is no limit to the amount I have learned in such a short period of time. Now that I have cleaned the summer cobwebs out of my brain I am fully ready to learn even more.

In the mean time I am trying to stay busy around campus. Writing the blog, writing for the Bates Student, gearing up for the IM sports season, and preparing to possibly join the Bates Jazz Band are the other activities that fill my days.

I am excited for another fun year at Bates. Time for some more reading. Until next time…

Short term coming to an end…

Hey all. Can’t believe short term is coming to an end. I will be heading home in 2 days. Short term has flown by. It seems like just yesterday I was writing that short term was halfway through. Even though this amazing time is coming to an end I have no regrets. I feel like I took advantage of everything short term had to offer: I went skiing, went to the beach, enjoyed outdoor concerts, took an interesting class, hung out with friends on the quad, went camping, watched fireworks, and relaxed.

I will miss Bates but I am excited to go home and tell all my friends about school. I will be back up in Maine just 3 weeks after I leave to work as a counselor at summer camp about an hour from Bates. It will be nice to be close by Bates and before I know it I will be back on campus. As this incredible year comes to an end I am already looking forward to next year. I guess rather than looking too far ahead I should enjoy my last 2 days. I should really get packing though…
